Hostel Knot

The reason why we want you to work with us is to please the guests from all over the world and to enjoy yourself interacting with our guests and learning the culture.

Even though our staff and I have plenty of knowledge about Izu, still sometimes we struggle with the language barriers.

Communicating with guests even those who are from Japan will be expected and we really would like our volunteers experience and communicate despite the language barriers. Most of our guests are able to speak English but sometimes we have our volunteers help us translate to our guests. Which we really appreciate so much!

The work itself isn't so difficult, most of our volunteers master the work within a week and teaches to the new volunteers. Depending on the shift, it may be from 2~4 hours. After the cleaning is done and laundry is dried, the rest of the day is yours.

Also you will be sharing a 2-story staff's house with 2 other volunteers (women). The house itself is just about 10-minutes by walking from our hostel. You will have your own private room with a bed and table included. The rest of the house will be shared.

We hope you'll like this place and you'll be a member of our hostel to make the guests comfortable and pleased.

We appreciate you reading our information. Let me introduce you to our hostel. We opened this hostel on 1st June 2018 after a year of renovation with a help of friends and local people. The hostel is located in the central of Izu Peninsula, "Shuzenji", well known as one of the famous and historical onsen town (hot spring). Some people say this onsen area seems to be like "little Kyoto". Bamboo forests, some day-use onsen (including foot bath), historical temples, and also surrounded by lots of nature that will make you feel relaxed. We've had 50% of Japanese guests and 50% guests from all over the world. Please search ‘Hostel Knot’ on the internet if you're interested in "Shuzenji". And I'm the manager of this hostel, Ryohey. My perspective on life had changed drastically because of the encounter of people at the hostels I stayed at while traveling in New Zealand. Upon my return home, I started planning for a hostel in my hometown Izu, where I grew up. I wanted to provide a place for travelers, where I myself would be the knot of encounters. I have one full time staff helping me manage the hostel, Jamie. She is originally from United States, 2nd generation Japanese American, fluent in both English and Japanese. Please consult with her if you have any concerns or anything and have difficulty asking a male. She is more than ready to help your stay feel more comfortable. We hope at the end of your stay with us, you could think, “I’m glad I choose Shuzenji as my volunteer stay.” We look forward to having you work with us on our team.

Hostel Knot was my first experience with Worldpackers and the reason why I will definitely continue using it. I had an incredible time. Jamie and Ryohey take a lot of time to train new volunteers. They are extremely friendly, making it easy to ask questions and not be afraid of making mistakes. The atmosphere is great, and they are always helpful if you need anything. Since I’m learning Japanese, I had a lot of questions, and they were always happy to answer and help me. This Worldpackers experience is also special because you get a private room. The work is super easy. Thank you for the time!

It was a pleasure to have Sema be on our team and watching her adapt to the life in the countryside of Japan. She was always caring and always giving. She made sure the new volunteers were comfortable as well. Overall it was great to have her around and always eager to learn about the Japanese culture. Glad you had a great time in Izu! Continue to enjoy your adventures!

I had such a lovely time during my 5 weeks at Hostel Knot! The work load was very fair and never strenuous, most of the time we finished way earlier than the 'official' work hours suggested. Ryohey and Jamie were so welcoming and always ready to help or give advice. The house where volunteers stay at is a short walk away from the hostel and I had an amazing time there spending the evenings together with the other volunteers.
Shuzenji is a cute little town surrounded by beautiful nature and there is plenty to do for people who love the outdoors.
Thanks for everything! 🙏

My time in Izu was an amazing experience! The work is simple, the hours respected, the hosts are very welcoming and ready to listen if you have any questions. My favorite part was how warm this little town is, there’s plenty of opportunities to interact with the locals and they are the kindest people you’ll meet. Without even speaking the same language, they all made me feel right at home and I’ll never forget my time with them. If you’re looking for a peaceful place, where you can make friends everywhere while exploring nature, this is the perfect experience for you! Thank you again!

It was a pleasure to have Anaïs work with us and see how she enjoyed her life in Shuzenji, Izu. She always had a smile on her, always eager to help, and always lightened the mood. She always had a notebook with her and always excited to learn a new word or phrase in Japanese. All the locals in the area would tell us their experience with her as well. We will miss her dearly and hope to have her visit us again. Thank you so much!
