I absolutely loved volunteering at Matala Hostel, my best experience to date. Gaïa the manager is well organised & a great communicator which creates a happy & relaxed environment. I truly enjoyed my shifts as I felt like a valued team member. I’ll forever cherish my time with Gaïa, the fellow volunteers & our kind and hilarious cleaner Polytimi. The hostel itself is very aesthetic, clean & I loved all the communal spaces (the pool!). The town of Matala is very special with a relaxed community, beautiful beach & great cafes/bars. Super grateful to have called Matala home for 6 weeks.

La manager, Gaia, es genial. La comunicación y el trato muy bien. El problema fue con una de las empleadas( la recepcionista). Nos trató mal desde el primer día y no nos hizo sentir bienvenidas. A la hora del trabajo de limpieza ella nos mandaba hacer tareas que le correspondían a ella y nos trataba fatal. Acabábamos tan cansadas mental y físicamente que adelantamos nuestra vuelta a España. Gaia entendió esto perfectamente y no nos puso problema, pero la recepcionista siguió trabajando ahí, pues los dueños no hicieron nada. Aún así, conocimos a mucha gente de otros países y lo pasamos bien.

Con Gaia, la manager, todo fue genial. Sin embargo, otra de las empleadas nos trató mal desde el primer día que llegamos y no nos hizo sentir bienvenidas. Cuando trabajábamos con ella nos mandaba hacer cosas que no estaban acordadas y eran parte de su trabajo. Se nos hizo tan pesado que tuvimos que adelantar los vuelos. Cuando se lo contamos a Gaia lo entendió perfectamente, pero nos tocó seguir trabajando con ella, los dueños no hicieron nada… A pesar de eso, conocimos a mucha gente de otros países y el resto de voluntarios fueron increíbles :)

Oh Matala 🤍 you have my heart! The experience was amazing, with Gaïa as the manager and my volunteer friends.
The job is fun and easy, plenty of time to have fun in the city and move around.
The facilities are amazing.
Matala is an incredible and magic place that I’m already missing✨
Definitely a month that i will never forget

I absolutely loved my time at Matala Hostel. It is important to note that this listing is not for Intra Muros Hostel which is in Heraklion but for their sister hostel in Matala on the south of the island which is where I spent my time. (Do clarify this when applying as locations are very different!)
I had a wonderful two weeks in Matala and only wished it could be longer! It is a small beach side town and the vibe is very much one of chill and relax. I shared a dorm with five other volunteers. Manager was amazing, shifts v well organised and days off also. You can hire a car to explore!
