Kasa Kultural Sol y Luna

We are a participatory place that promotes and demonstrates that a sustainable life by the lake is possible, working for the lake and Mother Earth. We are located in Copacabana, Chaapampa Community, at the end of the beach.

Work in the house is divided into groups that carry out specific roles such as permaculture, bio-construction, cleaning the lake, recycling, and environmental education, on a rotating basis.

I left before the volunteering, I had a week of volunteering and around the 3rd or 4th day she told me that she wouldn't give me any more lunch, that those were mine only... I told her that this doesn’t show up in the app and that, just as I am fulfilling my job, I was doing great, she had to follow what is detailed on the website.
When I looked at other volunteers' reviews, the same thing happened to them as well, I think she is confused because she told me that on the website it states that there are only 3 or 4 lunches per week.. so I spoke with support, I told them the case so they would have a record and I left.

Thanks, Iván. Our position states three lunches per week; we gave you four. We asked you several times to read it in full, and you said yes. You did not comply: you left one day early without notice. Also, your negative energy was the problem: you spoke to me as if I worked for you, not as a volunteer. You threw me a curveball by demanding a lunch that did not apply. You demanded a 50% discount on meals costing $2 and on taxis costing $1.50 and you complained to me about the lack of public transportation in the community.

After the work of the first day we discussed the task for the next day: cleaning the beaches and throwing them into the municipal trash can. Once we arrived at the trash can, it was full and we therefore contacted Libertad. She told us to empty the bags on the ground, that the garbage collectors would come to pick everything up tomorrow morning. It was impossible to throw in nature, facing the lake and with this wind the waste we had just picked up. We proposed to bring back the bags and throw them the next day, she did not want to, her house is not a 'trash can'… so we left.

From our experience living by the lake for more than 17 years, unfortunately there are areas where the garbage truck does not reach the point where we live, precarities that perhaps do not occur in your country but that, upon your arrival, we explain in detail the reason for each activity, the critique that a woman is in charge and the attitude of superiority they took in response to these actions, without understanding that bringing garbage to a country house can attract all kinds of pests. It is lamentable.

It’s such a wonderful place to stay at for couple days. However it’s not a great place to volunteer at in my opinion. The host is really strict about everything. If you stay for 7 days you will get lunch only 3 times and the first lunch was rice and she gave us vegetables with words “make yourselves some salad”. Then she kicked us one day earlier than we were agreed on because she said that she has new people coming and we have 3 hours to leave her house even though that she had lots of other beds for customers. The work was good tho. Each day different tasks.

The volunteer days were strict, and you decided to arrive one day early. You were greeted with a special lunch that had nothing to do with rice; it was baked fish, which we remember you appreciated and which was very expensive due to a cultural festival, the same one of which we made you a part. We shared costumes and many free things, we never argued about extending your volunteering and, of course, you could stay if you were guests, but they didn’t talk about it either.

I stayed at La the project over a week and would recommend it to anyone. The work: three hours a day for me was usually in landscaping and one day of picking up trash along the coast. Libertad is an experienced host, respects the working hours, gives clear instructions, and is open to sharing her community with the volunteers. If you're heading through Copacabana you should make a stop over here!

We had a really great week with Libertad and Cisco. We learnt so much about permaculture and the environment. We really enjoyed seeing the difference our work made. The meal we all had together was really special and delicious. The only issue we had is that we were expected to work 7 days not 6, which meant we wouldn't have a day off to explore. Once we realised this Libertad was happy for us to move the extra shift to another day (6 hour day instead of 3) so we had a day off. As we don't speak Spanish we had not see this information in the description. We really recommend this placement :)
