La Fanega

We are Martijn (42), Karin (41) and Noah (4). We have been living in Álora, Andalucia since november 2020. We have a finca not too far from town and live here with our dog Bamboo and the newest member of the family, Mapache the cat.

We run a small scale hostel next to our house. There is still a lot that needs to happen here. At the moment we mostly need help on the land where we are establishing a food forest. Weeding, preparing sites for planting etc. Sometimes we can also use some help with small DIY choirs.

You can experience life on the campo while still being close to a village. The people that live around us are very friendly. There are local fiestas to attend and the village is very lively. You can also meet people from around the world as they pass by and stay at our place.

Álora is a typical Andalucian white village, but more alive then others. There is a broad choice of restaurants and bars. It's not overrun with tourists, so you still get a taste of the real Spanish live.
We are fairly close (30 minutes by car) to one of the areas biggest attractions, Caminito del Rey. A 2 to 3 hour walk along side cliffs and above the Guadalhorce river. Furthermore there are a lot of hiking trails in the area and the area is popular with cyclists and climbers. Many big cities are within an 2 hour drive. Besides Málaga you can go to Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla or Ronda.

Martijn, Karin and Noah are just amazing! Very warm-hearted and welcoming people. And also Bamboo is such a sunshine, he is probably one of the nicest dogs I have ever met. ☀️ We spent some really nice time together. Sometimes Micha and I were over to their place or we were sitting together by the fire. They had some wonderful stories to share. We enjoyed it a lot. Work was great too. Very chilled and relaxing . I highly recommend this place! We would both gladly come back anytime.🍀

Martijn, Karin, Noah and Bamboo were the best! Mi and my partner Micha had a very pleasant stay, they always tried their best to help us :) work was nice as well, Martijn has many fun projects you can help with. Bamboo was probably the nicest dog I've met so far! We really had a great experience, would definitely recommend!
Greetings from Finja and Micha PS. Micha is really inspired by goats now:D

Martijn and the family were so welcoming and helpful! We loved hanging out with the resident cats and Bamboo (pet dog). We had a lovely time working and staying at the hostel and met some friendly travellers along the way.
We mainly did gardening tasks and painting during our stay, and these tasks were adapted for our abilities, skill level, travel plans and weather.
Public transport options are limited, for us this was not too much of a problem as we were happy to slow-travel on this trip, however I would hire a car if I were to return to make the most of what southern spain has to offer.

I recommend this place and the host wholeheartedly. It is in a very nice location and if you go a few more miles (about 15-20 km) you will reach a beautiful, natural mountain area with lakes, climbing areas, etc... The hosts were very nice and friendly. They did what we agreed on. They were also very open about the time and work, so I had the opportunity to bring my work hours forward and finish earlier in a given week, and then I was free to do whatever I wanted with the rest of my time... So, thank you again for your openness and welcoming atmosphere. I really enjoyed being there.
