Project Corazon de los niños

Corazón de los Niños is a community-based organization located in Antigua, Guatemala, dedicated to improving the quality of life for families living in vulnerable conditions through education, health, food security, economic development, and community organization. For over 30 years, we have worked directly with local communities to create sustainable solutions that empower people to use their own knowledge and skills to build better lives for their children and their future. Our programs focus on strengthening families, supporting education, improving well-being, and encouraging cooperation and leadership within the community.

Volunteers are an essential part of our work, helping with educational activities, community projects, workshops, administrative support, and creative initiatives that make our programs stronger. Volunteering with us means becoming part of a real, active community where your contribution has a meaningful impact and where you will learn about Guatemalan culture while working alongside local families and leaders in a safe, respectful, and well-organized environment.

Our organization is guided by responsibility, respect, honesty, and solidarity, values that shape how we treat our team, our volunteers, and the families we serve. If you are looking for an authentic, impactful volunteer experience that is deeply connected to a local community, Corazón de los Niños is a place where your time and heart will truly make a difference!

My name is Lilian Martínez Cordón de Méndez, and I have been the General Director of Corazón de los Niños since 1990. I believe that people can transform their lives when they are given opportunity, guidance, and respect. Working with international volunteers is one of the most rewarding parts of my work, as it allows us to exchange ideas, cultures, and energy while building something meaningful together.

I enjoyed collaborating with the project and meeting a friendly and inclusive team. As aspects to improve, I believe that participation schedules should be established more clearly. Moreover, access to the accommodation was a limitation, as it remained locked at night, and although I mentioned it from my arrival, I received a key only near the end of my stay. I think this could have been resolved earlier to provide greater autonomy to the volunteer.
Overall, it was a positive experience.

Spending weeks here was a truly heartfelt and enriching experience for me! I supported the English teacher, organized the pharmacy and donations, painted spaces, prepared markets, created videos, updated the Worldpackers profile, and led nutrition workshops. I felt trusted and encouraged to share my ideas. Living inside the center made everything even more special, it felt like being part of a family. Clear communication about schedules is important, but once aligned, the experience becomes smooth and deeply meaningful. I'm very grateful and happy to answer any questions!

I volunteered at Corazón the project and quickly felt part of a family! I helped with painting, organizing the pharmacy and donated clothes, preparing markets, supporting the English teacher, updating the Worldpackers page, creating videos, and planning nutrition lessons. You're encouraged to share your own ideas. It's important to clearly agree on schedules and tasks with the organizers. The accommodation is comfortable, services are nearby and affordable, and you can truly see the project's impact. Feel free to contact me!
