Refugio Los Albergues https://refugiolosalbergues.weebly.com/

The next working periods will be:

1 December – 18 December
3 January – 20 January
Los Albergues

Los Albergues is a rustic place surrounded by nature, just three minutes from the village of Pitres, a very characteristic town in the Alpujarra.

The house is in need of some renovation and improvements. There is a hostel with a kitchen, a dormitory, and a large common room. There is also a large plot of land where I would love to create a garden full of herbs and flowers.

The toilets are outside. The place is rustic and does not have many modern comforts, but it has a lot of character.
Why volunteer here?

Come here if you enjoy construction work, gardening, and cooking together as a group.

Regarding food, all diets are welcome except veganism, as it is very difficult to manage in a group setting. We always cook together — no fast food!
Next working periods

The next working periods will be:

1 December – 18 December
3 January – 20 January

You are welcome to come during either of these periods. I would like to have a group of 4–5 volunteers.
Daily schedule

08:30–09:00 — Breakfast
09:00–13:00 — Work
13:30 — Lunch
Afternoon break
16:30–19:00 — Work / shopping
20:00 — Dinner

Lunch and dinner are always cooked together. The food is vegetarian and sometimes includes meat. Unfortunately, I cannot accommodate a vegan diet.
What will we work on?

We will be working with wood and building a terrace with closing doors. Hopefully, we will be able to use some of the acacia trees that we have already chopped.

We will also build walls using clay, hay, and lime (cal). I have never done this before, so I am very curious to see how it works!
How to get here

To come to Pitres, take the Alsa bus from Granada towards Trevélez and get off at Empalme de Pitres.

From there, it is about a 7-minute walk to Los Albergues.

There are three buses a day on the Granada–Trevélez route, running from the morning until the late afternoon.

My name is Boris Rodriguez Hauck. I am responsible for the hostel. I live for five months in the hostel, and seven months in Berlin. Hello, I'm Sofía, Javier's partner, and I wanted to share my experience on this site.
The owner is an unpleasant person to communicate with since you have to agree with him; if not, he goes against you. The working hours and days off are not respected; he wants you to be available 24/7 and doesn't let you enjoy your free time as you please.
With women he's disrespectful, as he oversteps; with another volunteer, when she said goodbye to her, we could see the others how he touched her butt.
As a woman I wouldn't recommend it to another. The only good thing are the volunteers, especially Jesús, wonderful!

Javier has done almost nothing. If anything, he always had to listen to very loud negative music. He has publicly used drugs and also always defended drug use. Children also come to me. So that is not acceptable at all. He showed no interest in the place whatsoever. He never cooked, but always ate. He always gave orders. Sofia is Javier's girlfriend. Very nice and also hardworking. But what mattered was only him. Why is someone like that being admitted to Worldpackers?

My experience at the hostel was very good; I learned a lot from Boris, who was kind enough to teach me the construction tasks. I was able to share with the other volunteers and with Jesús, who cared that our stay would be the best possible. Boris has a life philosophy that is respected and he likes to debate ideas. It was my first volunteer experience with worldpackers and I learned a lot about a sustainable lifestyle. Grateful to Boris, Jesus and the other volunteers for making the experience unforgettable. See you soon

My experience was very positive. It's a perfect place to explore mountains, waterfalls, trails and nearby villages. The refuge is rustic, with cabins and a shared dorm, and hygiene could be improved, but you embrace a simple lifestyle with outdoor bathrooms and insects. Work hours (9–13) are respected, and tasks range from cooking and cleaning to gardening and painting. I really appreciate Boris's philosophy, although sometimes his ideas feel too radical and his words too harsh. The strongest part was the family atmosphere, which Jesus helped create in a truly decisive way.

Have an incredible time at the hostel; you must be a person who respects the different ways of living and/or personalities; if you can do that, everything will be fine - there are so many positive things you can take for your life; pitres and the rest of the villages of La Alpujarra are very beautiful; The place is very beautiful and I had a very nice time with the other volunteers and the host, the place is not as luxurious as mentioned in the description and you should actively participate in the morning activities. It is a place that invites you to connect with nature and with other people. Thanks Boris

The hostel is a great place to stay if you're looking for a remote location in the mountains and want to get away from the city. The host is also friendly, but we had small disagreements about what we can do for work in his property. Eventually, we solved those, so overall it was okay. I would recommend to check who else is coming to work here and plan to travel together with fellow volunteers because its better to work here as a group.
