Regen Habitat

Our idea of Habitat is that of an Ecosystem that hosts human beings as an active and non-degrading regenerative element of the environment and the other species that inhabit it.

If we observe natural systems, we see that each element is closely connected to the others. Species support each other in virtuous cycles in which inputs and outputs constantly fall into dynamic equilibrium, exactly as happens in every healthy organism.

We apply the approach, methods and tools of Permaculture to design , a holistic science of designing regenerative human settlements, in order to create beneficial functional relationships between plants, animals and structures. We reintegrate human activities into the territory so that they have a positive impact on the ecosystem.

We follow the approach of Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture , aiming to improve soils, increase biodiversity, collect agricultural products rich in nutrients: soil health also means people's health.

In cultivation we favor stratified and successional Agroforestry Systems , which imitate natural ecosystems.

The plants we plant occupy different vertical layers depending on their light needs. Successional means that we plant more hardy and pioneer species that create the conditions for more demanding plants.

We choose plants for direct human use (fruit trees, medicinal plants, etc.) and place them alongside support plants for biomass production or with other ecosystem functions.

My name is Giuseppe Sannicandro, I was born in Puglia, a land that has always welcomed my interest in nature and outdoor life with its nature, its traditions and its flavors. Passionate about Regenerative Agriculture, Earthmoving, Water Management, Keyline Design, Soil Fertility, Horticulture and AgroForestry Systems, I studied and graduated in Permaculture Design in Tenerife.

After years of study and practice, I now design and teach Permaculture in Italy and Europe. I am co-founder of the Regen association and member of the Italian Academy of Permaculture, for which I also carry out tutoring activities for the Diploma. I organize and teach courses and workshops, including the 72-hour certified Permaculture Design Courses (PDC).

For years I have been passionately designing and offering consultancy to multifunctional farms, self-sufficiency projects and ecological communities and I am involved in urban permaculture projects. I believe that the future of the planet is entrusted to us and to our care and I am committed to disseminating the culture of regeneration of natural environments: we can naturally improve the fertility of the land and, at the same time, regenerate living, abundant ecosystems, similar to natural ones, and also productive of both food and other resources.

I spent almost 3 weeks at the project - most of the work we did during this time was harvesting grapes in vineyards which are separate from the agroforestry fields. There are challenges with ecologically conscious communal living in an old house with limited resources, especially when maintenance/cleaning of the house is mostly self-organized by volunteers and expected to be done almost entirely outside of the 6-hour per day working hours. I made some wonderful friends and appreciated the time with everyone including Giuseppe and Diego (who facilitated most of our daily work) - thank you the project!

I loved my time at Regen, Guiseppe is so knowledgeable and willing to share, and the other volunteers were amazing and so welcoming. There was a great balance between working and free time, and the work was super enjoyable and rewarding. I would definitely recommend this experience!

My time at the project was truly unforgettable. Giuseppe, the host, was very kind, and the volunteers were friendly, caring, and helpful. I learned more about agroforestry and the lifestyle of a farmer. Very interesting and I'm having so much fun while on the farm—some of the best times I've had. The volunteers made it even more memorable, creating memories I will always cherish. I want to thank Giuseppe sincerely for inviting me to be part of the project community.

I’m glad I met very nice volunteers there, but the ladies bedroom is UPSTAIRS and AFTER GOING THROUGH the guys bedroom, very uncomfortable. To go to the bathroom you have to get down a very narrow ladder. The food is controlled by the host. At the time I was there each person could eat at max 3 eggs. When we asked to buy peppers (3 uni), they said it was too expensive. Ppl had to beg for some food. Also the host would get into the kitchen and steal the volunteers food.

Giuseppe replied

Dear Gabi, sorry for the misunderstanding, clarified last week with everyone. The peppers we disagreed on were for processed products we sell, and we don't mix our regenerative tomatoes with conventional food for clients. There was an egg miscalculation—we buy 180 eggs weekly. No one has ever gone hungry here, with plenty of organic food, partly regenerative. Food is bought for everyone, including staff, not from the volunteer budget, and costs 60% more than our allowance to keep it organic
