ReNova Arka

If you love animals and nature you'll love ReNova Arka. We are trying to create a healing biotope where humans, animals and nature can flourish. Here you have an opportunity to develop relationships with real dog, cat, pig, sheep, rabbit and chicken persons. You can learn about all of these beautiful animals and their social life too.

You can enjoy nature in our sanctuary and in the peaceful Croatian nature around us. For transport, you can walk or ride a bike. We can give you lifts in the car to/from the town when we are going there. Nearby, in the town of Daruvar, we have pools with thermal water and the possibility of all kinds of wellness. We have a small mountain with a beautiful view of the whole area. The small town of Daruvar is only a 30-minute walk from here. There you have everything you need from 'civilization' and even a cozy and cheap cinema with the latest films to watch (here in Croatia we show films in the original languages, only with subtitles in Croatian).

My name is Zeljka. I'm Catholic theologist and former professor at Catholic college. I was teaching subjects of "Animal Theology" and "Border Questions between Theology and Natural Science". I'm trying to make my knowledge in theory come true by building an real animal sanctuary and educational center.

There will never be a dull day at the ark. From feeding the animals to gardening to construction projects, be prepared for a varied and enjoyable experience. We want to help you develop whatever skills you are interested in. We love to share food with you and have a cosy campfire once in a while.
There is a small guesthouse with 2 beds and a bathroom. There is also the possibility to sleep in a bed at the top of the barn, for a rustic experience. We can host people with their own tents or campers - we are hoping to build more accommodation soon.

We are very extraordinary family! We are trying to live all together with no fences between us as much as we can ... REAL COMUNITY BEETWEEN THE SPECIES!!!

We'll be very grateful if you want help us in this mission and help us to grow.

Our family now consists out of: 4 dogs (Bobby, Tara, Mazica, Hertz), 18 cats (Koko, Kiara, Tiggy, Zeta, Pahi, Vida, Nomsy, Sara, Pongo, Kleo, Botza, Petko, Richard, Šarko,, Elio, Juan, Kio, Tiry), 3 pigs (Micek, Maja and 'little Gigy' - he is quite huge now, but still piglet in his mind), female donkey (Beba), 2 rebits (Gina, Jimmy), 10 sheep (friendly Drago, Karlo, Pero and others who don't like much of contacts with humans) and about 20 chickens (friendly Katica, Sokolica, Mila, Dragica and others who don't lke much of contacts with humans).

I had a great time at the animal shelter. The work isn't hard and you have plenty of time for yourself or to spend time with the animals that grew really dear to me during that time. Also all the people, Zeljka, the neighbors and the other volunteers, were super kind and I enjoyed spending time with them. My only negative point is the accommodation, as the house where the volunteers sleep isn't particularly clean (and there is no bathroom door, the bathroom and the anteroom are only separated by a sheet).

My friend and I stayed 3 weeks and decided to extend 2 more because we felt truly at home. Zeljka is very kind and always open to talk or help. The work with the animals itself is not that hard or long, and really enjoyable, but a lot of different parts need cleaning and organizing, so that's a nice extra task for the people that want to help more.
Zeljka and the neighbors, Jolana and Michael are all very friendly, sometimes cooking for us (Zeljka's food is amazing ) and inviting us to the cinema or the little lake nearby. It's a very calm and beautiful place, ideal for a slow life.

Unfortunately, our stay was not positive overall. We enjoyed the animal care and flexible work but there were serious issues with basic necessities. The sanctuary ran out of water, so the fire department had to refill the well. As Zeljika could not cover the €59 bill, we were asked to pay €30. The volunteer house has no drinking water and we found mould on a mattress. We left one day early after finding a sick cat. When we asked Zeljika for help, she became aggressive, shouted at us, called us “weak” and “modern girls from the city” and said we were not helping. We felt unsafe and disrespected

My experience with Zelijka and her animals was fantastic. The tasks are not tiring at all and do not take up the whole day. Zelijka is a fantastic person who tries to involve you in Croatian culture and the world of the Catholic religion. Shout out to Micheal and Yuliana the neighbors most wonderful people I met.
