Shangrila EcoVillage Project

What if life could be amazing? Shangrila is co-creating a space to answer that. ✨

Here travelers are invited to have more than \"just a place to stay\". It is a chance to experience community as a living practice: to share meals, dreams, meditation, meaningful work, honest communication, silence, celebration, and the everyday joy and pain of relearning how to live together with more heart, awareness and presence.

We are creating an intentional community on seven hectares in the hills of southern Sicily, surrounded by nature and views toward the sea.

Our love for the sea and sunsets, brings together inner work and practical creation: caring for the land, developing gardens and agroforestry, improving our spaces, and slowly moving toward greater self-sufficiency.

Volunteers are not simply extra hands, they are seekers of a new way, with us. We are interested in the person who arrives: friends (some for life) — their gifts, curiosity, creativity and way of contributing. If we can, we do our best to connect people with activities they enjoy and do well.

Everyone here shares the simple tasks that keep collective life alive: cleaning, tidying up and celebrating together.

Shangrila is still becoming, as its seasons pass, people flow through and this space is reborn again and again.

You will be part of this story, you matter here. Your seed will be nourishing on the next arrival.

The people who spend time here are part of the narrative; some come for a chapter, some return, and occasionally someone discovers that what began as a journey feels surprisingly like a place to grow roots.

If you are curious about community living, ecology, spirituality, meditation and new ways of living together, you may find here much more than a volunteering experience — perhaps even a glimpse of a life you did not know you were looking for. 🌿

One of the qualities we cultivate most is Mudita — to create space for the other to shine. It is a Buddhist practice: your gifts do not diminish mine; they enrich the whole. We like to celebrate people's gifts, ideas, breakthroughs and creations rather than compete with them. Gratitude is part of our everyday culture, not as politeness, but as a way of remembering how much of life is created through one another.

So when someone joins us, we are interested in much more than what they can do. We want to know the person: what makes you curious, what makes you laugh, what you love creating, what you want to learn, and what you naturally bring into a group.

You can expect deep conversations, spontaneous celebrations, shared meals, quiet moments, experiments that work beautifully and others that absolutely don\'t. We don\'t try to create perfection — we try to create enough trust and honesty that life can actually happen.

We balance that with moments of silence and solitude, contemplation and deliberate boredom, where insights and profoundness are born.

If you come to Shangrila, we hope you feel welcomed not for fitting into a role, but for bringing another unique piece of life into the place. ✨

The community is a home away from home. I met a group of people from around the world with different cultures and backgrounds. the community is oozing with hospitality and respect. The only problem I have was wishing I stayed longer .

The community is an interesting project, my interest in volunteering at this place was to learn about organic gardens and a sustainable life, Mauna has always been respectful and available to answer any questions about the topic. I respect Mauna's concept of the project as a 'tribal community', but personally the repetitiveness of the topic in a repetitive way seemed unnecessary to me and at times it provoked discomfort as a woman. Overall I had a positive experience, the place has a spectacular view and the project offers many opportunities.

I had a great time at the community! Learned a lot of things, especially with gardening tools. But whatever you want to learn there, you will get teached nicely, and there is much to learn!! I also learned how to do my own veggie gardens and that is really helpful for my future🤩☘️🥬🫜 I got along with everyone really good, I was at a quiet time there with not so many volunteers and could focus on myself and enjoyed Sicily. Thank you Mauna😺

From the moment I arrived, Mauna welcomed me into the community. I was quite shy, but his openness & kind encouragement helped me come out of my shell & reconnect w personal interests I'd forgotten. I really felt part of a tribe here, included & valued. I quickly learned many skills, like foraging, cooking, living off-grid (i.e. rainwater for daily use, making conserves from foraged olives etc). Mauna is a generous host, passionate about sharing his knowledge on ecology, holistic practices & more. He also offered Reiki, which I found deeply healing. Feel v grateful for the special experience

Thank you, Mauna, for your welcome. It feels like home.
At 57, I’ve just had my first woofing experience, and I must admit that what I’ve just experienced makes me want to do it again… The place and the site are incredible: pure nature surrounded by olive trees, a sea view with a dive in less than a quarter of an hour, Ragusa, Caltagirone... nearby.
It's a small setup, which suited me perfectly.
The work is varied, and everyone can find their place, learn new skills while contributing (olives, compost, repair, maintenance...)
