Sítio Salamandra

We enjoy cooking, listening to music, sometimes to drink cacao and dance. On my free days, I enjoy to go to the mountain, up to the Pico do Papagaio and other amazing mountains close to it.

You can eat with us vegetarian meals (sometimes we eat fish) or you can cook your own food. Kitchen will always be available for you. You will have a private small room with bed, which is attached to a house that we rent for guests, usually available during the weekdays. When it´s rented for guests, you may move to the mezzanine in the big house, which is also a cool place to stay.

There are a feel keywords to describe our vision to this place: peace garden, water sanctuary, regeneration, healing, unity, self-care, love.

We are a small farm (3ha), with 2 houses located in the beautiful Vale do Matutu - Aiuruoca - Minas Gerais. We are 3 friends living and working here (Sandra, Raphael and Tiago), a friendly female dog (Nina) and a lazy hunter female cat (Nuvem). The place here is very beautiful, surrounded by trees and mountains, with access to the river. Matutu is a bit isolated place through the dirt road. It´s part of the Serra do Papagaio National Reserve. People come to here to do trekking, climbing and relax. We rent rooms for guests, cook them breakfast and optional dinner. We also organize some cultural events with food and music and spiritual/healing events, such as ceremonies and therapies.

We are growing organic vegetables, fruit trees and visioning to develop an agroforestry. Our idea is to bring people with knowledge to give courses (permaculture, agroforestry, water management, bioconstruction and others). Worldpackers will be welcome to participate on some events for free.

My experience at the guest house was short but great! The host was very welcoming and made me feel very at ease. The volunteers' room is very cozy. The work is very easy, nothing heavy. And with the time off, it's possible to rest quite a bit and enjoy the place; there are waterfalls and trails very good to do. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get to know the Vale do Matutu.

I would like to thank Sandra for the warm welcome and the opportunity to join this role, since I was the first person to fill it.
The work was easy and consisted of preparing breakfast, lunch, and dinner for Sandra, and these meals ended up being my three meals as well.
Due to the unusual rains at this time of year, I was able to explore little of the area, but I did get to know the main nearby points of interest.
There is a grocery store about 2 km from the Sítio, in case you need to do some personal shopping.

It was a great first volunteering experience. I loved getting to know the guest house, Vale do Matutu, and the entire surrounding region. I was able to connect with nature, help with daily tasks, and also with painting and repairs. Sandra welcomed me very warmly; we had great conversations, walks, and she was always suggesting outings. The house is very comfortable, I ate very well, and I was able to meet another volunteer, Valéria, who also welcomed me very well from the start.

My time at the guest house was amazing, and for me who wanted an immersion in nature while contributing my design and media skills, it was a goal achieved. There are several waterfalls nearby, an incredible quiet, and Sandra and her animals are kind and welcoming. I will miss everyone and if there is an opportunity, I will return! Gratitude for everything.
