The Earthbag Home
Join our Creative Life in Crete: DIY, Arts, and Restoration
About the Host
Hello! I’m Sofia. I am a photographer and graphic designer with a deep passion for multidisciplinary arts—from sculpture and ceramics to DIY home restoration. I live in the stunning region of Crete, where life is governed by the rhythm of the seasons and the joy of creating things by hand. Our family is a curious, creative bunch, and we are looking for volunteers to join us in our daily adventures across two unique family locations: my own home and my parents' land (where our earthbag home is).
What we are looking for
We are looking for handy, enthusiastic, and creative souls who aren't afraid to get their hands a little dirty. Because our projects are diverse, we value people who are adaptable and enjoy learning new skills on the fly.
We primarily need help with:
DIY & Building: Assisting with basic construction and renovation tasks.
Woodworking: General carpentry, restoration, and woodwork projects. We love giving old pieces new life.
Arts & Crafts: This is the heart of our home! Beyond the structural work, we love to collaborate on creative projects—whether that’s painting, craft-making, or artistic expression. If you have an eye for design or a love for traditional techniques, we’d love to learn from you as much as you learn from us.
What you can expect
You will be treated as part of the family, not just a guest. Our life in Crete is intentional, quiet, and deeply connected to the land. You can expect a supportive environment where your time and effort are respected. We value deep conversations, shared meals, and a "lived-in" home atmosphere rather than a polished, sterile one.
If you are a curious, self-motivated individual who appreciates the beauty of a project in progress and wants to experience authentic Cretan life through the lens of a creative family, we would love to welcome you.
What to expect from us
You will be treated as a member of our extended household, not as a temporary worker. We believe in mutual respect, clear communication, and transparency. Because our life is centered around family, you can expect an environment that is safe, grounded, and supportive.
We value volunteers who are self-motivated, kind, and genuinely interested in the "why" behind what we are doing! You can expect us to be hands-on with you; we work alongside our volunteers, share meals, and prioritize a space where you feel comfortable being yourself. If you are looking for an experience where your input is valued, your time is respected, and you are welcomed into a real, authentic family dynamic, you will find that here.
Important Notes:
Pets: There are 2 dogs living on the property, so you must be comfortable around animals.
Location: The property is 5 km away from the town and the nearest beaches, featuring a slight uphill climb (we provide a bicycle for your daily commuting & I can also help with commuting with my car).
The Food: We provide one main meal per day, which is authentic, traditional Cretan-Greek food!
Transport & Getting Around:
We provide a bicycle for your daily commuting.
What to do with your time off & Local sights:
Exploring the Town & Walks: You can easily head into the town center to explore the local life. I live in the city center and am always available to show you around, take you out for walks, and hang out.
Road Trips & Traditional Villages: We can easily arrange road trips together to explore the beautiful, traditional surrounding villages in the area.
Creative Free Time: If you want to spend your free time working on your own personal building or craft projects, you are more than welcome to use my father's fully equipped workshop and tools.
