The Mudhouse Hostel

Mompiche is a quaint little fishing village in northern Ecuador. The village rests on a 40-mile crescent-moon bay. The world-class waves attract surfers from all over the globe and is a fantastic place to learn how to surf (classes and board rentals available year-round) since there are waves for all ability levels. Also out in that great big blue space, you can go on whale-watching excursions (September-November) or sit on the beach at night and be mesmerized by the fluorescent-green color of the plankton lighting up the waves, depending, of course, on the month you are here. There is a gorgeous, small island 10 minutes away called “Isla Portete”. It is not much more than a few homes, miles of pristine coastline, coconut palms and peace. From Mompiche, you can also walk to a stunning and picturesque black-sand beach only minutes away. Mompiche offers horseback riding along the beach. Also, just behind us is a protected rain forest packed full of incredible flora and fauna. There are forest tours available where you can see monkeys, toucans, parrots, waterfalls and much more. In short, Mompiche is a beautiful place to disconnect from everything and reconnect with nature.

We are a family of 4 from the Netherlands. Nout, Jolanda and our boys Dex (2 years) and Cas (9 months). We are very easy going and love to meet new people. Also our kids like to meet new "friends" ;) you will be treated like one of the family for as long as you stay!

What a beautiful stay at Mud House. This volunteering exceeded my expectations. The work and hours are more than reasonable, with so much flexibility to explore the area if you want too. It’s a short walk from Mompiche beach, a 5 min tuk tuk ride from Playa Negra & a little out of the hussle and bussle of the town so that you can have restful evenings. The bar on site means meeting people and locals is super easy and the hostel itself is nusselled in the mangrove. I really loved my stay here and would recommend future volunteers to come support this property!

Nout and Jolanda are great hosts, they are very communitive and reliable. Throughout my entire time at the hostel, they were checking in often to make sure I felt comfortable. The hostel itself is beautiful, it's full of plants and is a great place to connect with nature. The work was simple mostly cleaning and working in the garden, but this is probably a better work exchange for someone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty every now and then. Overall I had an incredible experience at Mudhouse and I would definitely recommend this work exchange to other travelers.

Nice location, beautiful family, quick duties, very spacious place, they are pet friendly, they accepted me with my pet, they were very kind and received me very well.
recommendation: do not work more than your hours, they will not give you any remuneration for that.
very positive and grateful family. A very nice hostel.

Evelyn is a great volunteer, does everything you ask her and does it good. Also a nice personality and a warm person. We accepted her with her little puppy dog, who was also very cool.
