The Valley House Hostel (and Bar & Restaurant) is on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. Our historic Victorian house is located on scenic wooded grounds close to Blue Flag beaches. We have a Woodland Faerie Trail, a 9-hole Pitch & Putt course and a beautiful lake on our grounds. The music sessions, conversation and pool table in our friendly pub will keep you happy in the evenings. Our courtyard is a lovely place to sit out and enjoy the fresh air.
We have a great international team of staff along with some volunteers. We work hard, and play hard here on Achill Island! Our traditional pub is busy with guests from all over the world each summer and we enjoy great music sessions in our little pub all year round. Come join the team...we promise you will fall a little bit in love with Achill Island.
The Valley House is an amazing, peaceful, semi-secluded location in Achill. It is a stunning hostel with amazing hosts. I absolutely adored volunteering here and wish I could have stayed longer. Alice and Pat are accomodating, warm, and inviting. Though it is out of the way of the city and towns it is easy to transport yourself to local shops/restaurants on foot (2.5hrs) bike (1hr) or hitchhike. You feel safe to roam to the beach that is 15 min walk away and take a swim if youre brave enough to jump in. I will definitely be back again.

I spent an amazing time in the valley house! Alice and Pat are wonderful people! They were always attentive, friendly and open. if they had to do something specific they told me or I could ask Pat anything and he had no problem to explain. The work is very easy and life there very quiet. For being my first experience as a volunteer I felt very comfortable, cared for and at home. I highly recommend it and I will be back for sure!

It was my third volunteering, and not my best for sure. Wrong period of the year (not many people in the hostel), and another helper always on my back telling what to do or not, basically acting like the manager, while Pat, though he is a really nice man, was not here til 6 pm. We had quite a lot to do with really few fun in exchange, and moved from one room to another all the time depending on guests. I can't really figure out what was really expected from me and what was my colleague's desire and orders. I guess it's a really nice place to stay with nicer colleagues in the summertime.

Working at The Valley House is a truly authentic rural Irish experience. For this reason I'd be lying if I said it didn't take a few days to get used to some of the idiosyncrasies of the place, but once I accepted these I had a great time. Work is hostel work mixed with manual tasks so there was plenty of variety. The bar is full of locals and the live music is spontaneous and authentic. The Guinness is superb! We received three decent meals a day - be prepared to eat late as the restaurant gets priority. It is remote so be prepared to hitch hike, bike or walk long distances to get around.
