The Valley House Hostel & Bar

The Valley House Hostel & Bar is on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. Our historic Victorian house is located on scenic wooded grounds close to Blue Flag beaches. We have a Woodland Faerie Trail and a beautiful lake on our grounds. The music sessions, conversation and pool table in our friendly pub will keep you happy in the evenings. Our courtyard is a lovely place to sit out and enjoy the fresh air.

In the high season we have a great international team of staff along with some volunteers. We work hard and play hard here on Achill Island! Our traditional pub is busy with guests from all over the world each summer and we enjoy great music sessions in our little pub all year round. In the low season it's quieter but there's still plenty to do and a nice atmosphere here in The Valley House.

I absolutely loved helping Alice and Pat out. The tasks were always clear and well-communicated. The work tempo is usually relaxed and you would always get help if you felt like you couldn't do something on time (very rarely, but sometimes there could be large groups of guests, and it would get a bit more intense). I loved exploring the island and meeting local folk at the bar. The house itself is gorgeous and so fun to take care of, the food was great. The only thing you need to pay attention to, since it's a rural remote area is transportation. Local buses are great, but a car is better :)

My experience at the Valley House Hostel and Bar was excellent. It was a real challenge, not being proficient in the English language and mostly interacting with English speakers. However, the staff and fellow volunteers were always supportive in helping me understand. Achill Island is a unique place where you can enjoy tranquility and appreciate its stunning landscapes. The daily tasks are straightforward, and you can make the most of the two days off to explore the island. I highly recommend this expérience for a refreshing break and meet locals people.

I stayed in The Valley Haouse for about 5 weeks, and it was both relaxing and really fun! I met alot of both international travellers and locals, and everyone was really welcoming and fun to be with. I was well fed with good food, and I was allowed to take ingredients for baking which was really nice. Alice and her husband was very nice and welcoming, and they were always ready to answer questions if you had any. The scenery in Achill is very beautiful with many beaches and cliffs, it almost seem magical, and the locals have different folktales that match the nature, which I really liked.

The Valley House is such an awesome place to volunteer. Alice, Pat, Bekah, and the whole team make you feel super welcome!! Plus the area is absolutely stunning. The work is straight forward and you get a lot in return. Definitely wish I could’ve stayed longer!

The experience exceeded my expectations. The Valley House is welcoming as are the people and the team of volunteers. They were flexible when it came to making changes to my other work schedule, and thanks to that I could work in other areas of the hotel. Pat, Rory and Bekah are very loving and friendly, it was nice to meet them.
A recommendation about the place: buy bug repellent before you arrive. The hotel is remote, close to lakes and the sea with good views and enjoyable walks. Now July is high season, so there will be work to do and music in the bar! I'll come back.
