Yabucoa Dreaming

Work at your own pace, but in coordination with the plants' needs and your fellow workers, spend five or more hours daily in nature and enjoy the comfort of a good house. Bring your skills, learn and share. Yabucoa is a beautiful municipality and the house overlooks the valley and sea. The land is fertile, but there are several challenges working it; heat, iguanas, ants, fast growing weed,... With the help of volunteers I hope to create an edible forest and restore the soil.

I started this permaculture project in 2020, and spend most of my time on the farm. Sometimes I have to attend meetings in San Juan and might stay over night. I'm very hands on and love to break up the day in smaller tasks, keeping busy and offline as often as my many jobs allow it. Volunteers will be trained by me and will work partially in teams, partially alone. Nature dictates the hours - heat, rain, planting or harvesting season etc. I strongly suggest you spend as little time as necessary online and make use of instruments, tools, read books, enjoy the view, go for walks and engage in conversations. Meals are taken together, no phones at the table.

Lisa was kind enough to pick me up. I would recommend bringing your own internet hotspot or using your phone's data, and bring a friend.

Unfortunately, I had to leave early after I got an emergency call from a friend asking for help in a rather uncomfortable situation.. Lisa was understanding of the emergency call. If you're LGBTQIA+ always ask hosts for their inclusion politics first! Take care <3

This "off the beaten track" farm was probably not what you had in mind when you signed up for a six week stay. I have high speed internet (optic fibre), and normally there are up to four volunteers for those who are looking for company. I'm not sure why you mention LGBTQIA+, as this is a non-discriminatory and gender equal home and I've hosted people of all walks of life, never mind their sexual, political, cultural or religious orientation. I was a bit puzzled that you left the same day you arrived, but I've learned to appreciate even unexpected changes.

Lisa was amazing. Great conversations and great food. This was an awesome place to get back in touch with nature and all the good food was very healing for the body.

Lisa made this experience unforgettable and she sets the bar high for other hosts. The accommodations were nice and comfortable. She taught me how to use every tool and gave clear instructions on what needs to get done and then gave us the freedom to work on what we wanted to. She has so many stories that I looked forward to hearing everyday. It’s so nice to eat the food we harvested.

For our first worldpackers trip we couldn’t have asked for a better experience or host! We had an amazing time on the farm spending time being active outdoors connecting with the beautiful land. Lisa is so knowledgeable and we learned so much from her; not only about permaculture but also about culture, healthy living, and life in general. She shared her experiences and stories along with her knowledge about the island and other parts of the world she is connected to during mealtime where we enjoyed her colorful and tasty cooking. Lisa is an amazing host. We are excited to see her farm grow!
