Volunteering here was a very unique experience. You really got immersed with the locals and got to know many people in the community. I was helping in the community centre to cook food for underprivileged families (although lack of government funding left us without food a bit but that's a bigger political issue). Pablito/Fernanda and Gustavo, who organised the volunteering, and the others in the community centre were so sweet and made me feel very welcomed and loved. The neighbourhood was apparently a little unsafe but usually I felt okay. I recommend this for an authentic locals experience!
