The Experience

Come and join me teaching English to the kids in my small town and enjoy the local life. Most of them are already studying English at school so this is just an addition to that. I'm providing free English lessons to them. Please don't expect formal classes. I'm a frequent solo traveler and have volunteered with Worldpackers which is what has inspired me to host.

This was also my first volunteering experience. I stayed for two memorable weeks with the home family in which I learnt a lot about bataknese culture. The classes were joined by ~20 kids of different age. They were very curious, friendly, polite and motivated to learn english. Outside the lessons they often asked for me to talk or play football in the street. Dina already prepared content and suggestions for the lessons but also gave the freedom to teach topics I'm interested in, if they make sense for the kids. Turned out the best way was not to teach new vocab but just practice speaking

This was my first volunteering experience, and it couldn't have been better. I spent almost two weeks teaching English in Tarutung. Dina was always helpful online and made sure everything was well organised. Her parents welcomed me like family, introduced me to the Batak culture, cooked delicious meals, and showed me beautiful places, including Lake Toba and the hot springs. The children were friendly, motivated, and a joy to teach. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to discover the authentic, non-touristy side of Sumatra and help local children improve their English.
