The Experience

Namaste! My name is Apsara. Volunteers will stay at my comfortable family home. A private room is provided with all day access to hot water and prepared meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We are looking for volunteer support at the orphanage, monastery/nunnery, and local school. This will involve assisting with English learning and creating fun activities for children. Your contributions will empower these children to improve their lives.

Hello! This experience was incredible. All communication with Aspara was so comfortable and she answered any questions promptly. The home is massive so you don't feel like you are intruding and the whole family/community is very open so you feel welcomed in immediately. I worked in the orphanage. The kids are diagnosed with HIV and their parents can't support them either because they have passed or don't have adequate resources. Throughout my stay Aspara helped plan and support any trips I wanted to do so I had the opportunity to explore Nepalese. I would definitely recommend this program!

This project is definitely not what I expected. The host is not truly interested in the humanitarian help for the children, but is more concerned with trying to trick you with undesirable and overpriced touristic activities. The project description does not fully cover the volunteer activity and there are important details missing. I haven't felt safe or respected during my trip, just constanly harassed to pay for unspecified activities by the programme. The only positive aspect is about the kids, which are eager to learn, but is such a shame this project has other hidden purposes.

Apsara replied

Dear Alexe,

First of all, thank you for your review. I'm really sorry to hear this and that you feel that way. My main goals for having volunteers coming to my house are to both make the children happy, and to give you the most wonderful experience of Kathmandu. I'm sorry to hear that I didn't achieve that goal with you. I think the language barrier, and cultural differences played a role in this.
However, I'm happy that you liked the kids.

I wish you all the best,
Apsara
