The Experience

In keeping with our core goal of providing the best possible care for our rescue dogs, volunteers help us with: dog feeding and watering, yard cleaning, dog walking, dog socialisation (e.g. patting puppies) and, if possible, some basic building/maintenance; gardening ( weeding). In return, a massive oversupply of joyful dog love is guaranteed. We require a minimum stay of 4 weeks stay. Training/ getting to know the activities takes 3-4 weeks.

The time I spent at the animal shelter was brilliant. The dogs and cats won me over straight away. The tasks weren't too demanding and I really enjoyed them. Just bear in mind that the journey to the shelter by public transport can take a bit longer. I really hope to go back there one day.

Everything indicated that it would be a place where we would want to stay longer. The dogs are wonderful, the work is simple, the flat is amazing, and the maintenance will give you a good experience in Sofia.
Unfortunately, some days were more hostile than others due to broken communication between the permanent staff, the hosts, and the volunteers. Some staff members have taken on the role of owners of the place and the dogs, which hindered our work experience as some rules were strict for us but not for them, or rather it depends on whether they like you or not, rather than the work you do

Our experience working in the shelter was mostly good, it's a very simple job, repetitive, easy to learn. It was fulfilling, the work with the dogs is very nice, the exchange is good, the apartment its very good and the money is enough. Keep in mind that the train ride to the shelter is very long. But some days we have some difficulties because of some of the Bulgarian workers that act unprofessional and sometimes immature and mean. There were some misunderstandings were we felt not heard, and at the end we left early because Nico fall in a muddy day and she was injured and couldn't work.

I never imagined how much this shelter would change me. I worked the shelter day caring for dogs of all profiles. It's hard to choose favorites, but Bambi, Bonnie and of course Goshko stole my heart. I'm deeply grateful to Terry and Yuliya for the support and kindness, even when I got injured. What they've created here is purpose, love and courage in action. This place isn't just about tasks, it's about truly connection. If you come, come with heart, presence and willingness to truly help. This shelter heals dogs and humans. I can't wait to return. Thanks so much for everything!!! 🤍

Thank you for the heart-felt words! We truly need more people like you who come with their hearts open and willing to really help. Not just to spend time with us and explore.
Please come back and...stay. You know that you are hired :)

If you are a the shelter lover, this is the place to be. I even asked to extend my stay because I enjoyed volunteering so much🤩 You just have to take into account that public transport takes up a large part of the day. Also, this volunteering is a mix between take care of dogs and do cleaning tasks. I really want to come back there. Thank you Yuliya for everything.
