The Experience

We are a family of 5. My wife is from Transylvania and grew up in an off grid community, until she was 10 years old, using a bartering system, exchanging goods, produce and physical work. I was born and raised on the California coast and moved to Virginia as an adult. Our two boys were born in Virginia. When they reached the ages of 3 and 5, we thought we would expose them to a different culture and smaller community life, so we moved to Hungary.

Staying with the farm family was interesting and I had a warm welcome. They live in a nice house in Tök, growing their own food. There are many projects to help in and learn from, feeding the animals, planting fruit trees, working in the garden. You can also play with their kids, who are friendly and kind and curious to learn about new people.

Felippe is an amazing person with a great attitude and demeanor. He was instrumental in a farm to table event that we hosted, in his role as chef. All of our guests were extremely impressed with the quality of the food in the 5 course meal that he prepared with ingredients gathered on our farm and from locals. He visited while a large group was here and his personality kept everyone in a good mood. He took ownership of preparing meals for everyone and set a positive working example. He was attentive to our dog and helped out in the garden, watering every morning. He also did a fantastic job applying linseed oil to freshly sanded beams and floor boards in our newly renovated living room and bathroom. We can't wait to visit him and his wife when they open their own restaurant.

Martha and Tim are good people. They tried to make us feel always at home and we learnt diffentent things that surely will help us in the future. They have wonderful kids, they are talented and respectful. We enjoyed playing some fun games with them indeed. Martha cooks perfect and if you enjoy local food, you are lucky because the food is delicious 😋 About the work we know now how to do some small things regarding gardening. This place allows you to connect with nature, get fresh air, to enjoy watching the animals and meet other international volunteers. I highly recommend it.

The time we were at the farm was a pleasant experience. It's a nice family. Tim was always willing to patiently explain things to us and teach us some of what he knows. Marta cooks very well, we tried several Hungarian dishes. She was also always very patiently willing to explain to us the work that had to be done, and she always took good care of us. The children are very talented in music and sports, it was fun to share with them. Overall, the farm was a nice place to spend time, surrounded by nature and animals, away from the pollution and noise of the city. Thank you, the farm family!

Had a great week at the farm! Spent heaps of time in the plentiful garden weeding, watering, caring to the animals and a bit of work on the new house build. Tim the host was friendly and welcoming and the other volunteers made the experience completely worth it. Tok is a cool little rural town about an hour bus from Budapest so great for someone looking to get away from the noise :))

Quinn is a smart and capable man. He was quick to learn everything and very helpful around the homestead. Quinn spent hours, each morning, manually watering many meters of potatoes, garlic and other vegetables. We trusted him with many things, from setting up the pump in the creek daily to tending the gardens. He was great with our dog, walking her regularly, keeping her water full and keeping her engaged. Quinn was part of a large group here and got along with everyone. He helped to paint our bedroom with lime stone and helped to oil some of the beams in our outbuildings. He has a great attitude, is extremely personable and we wish the best for him during his travels and beyond.
