The Experience

We run a private farm in Lagoa in the Algarve, where we have puppies and dogs coming from killing stations, born on the street, puppies disposed in the garbage or dogs that are simply not wanted anymore and end up in the shelter. We are not a shelter in the classical sense, as we have the unique opportunity to let the dogs run free on our spacious fenced yard with numerous social contacts with the other dogs and different people.

My time at the Quinta was extremely rewarding but at times very hard work which I did not mind. You are allowed to use their car which is amazing as you can take the dogs to the beach and explore the local area and extremely generous from the owners. I think that it is more tailored to German speakers as there can be miscommunication with some important things.

My experience was positive and I loved the dogs, I grew fond of some dogs and it was hard to leave/watch them leave. However, you should know: - almost everybody is German and they mostly text and talk in German - the volunteers' car isn't currently working, so you have to ask Jutta (the kindest person! she always tries to help volunteers but she is very busy), take an Uber or walk 40 min to the bus stop, really inconvenient to get food and for your day off - people wouldn't do their cleaning tasks in the house so it got very dirty - I always did the cleaning shift which is ok but monotonous

I had the best time at the Quinta! Every day was a joy, even though it was quite hard work at times. There's a few different shifts so you can have a go at doing different things, and with all the dogs there's never a boring moment. Lea and Jutta were so lovely and I'll definitely be coming back 🐶

I truly loved the time I spent at the quinta with the dogs and the people. Before I arrived I was thoroughly informed about the amount of work I would be doing, so this didn't come as a surprise. Every question I had was also answered during a phone call. In the beginning it takes some time for the dogs to get used to you and to learn all of the routines, but the people there are very patient and encouraging which helped a lot! overall I would definitely recommend it if you really love dogs!

Short review:
My experience at this place was disappoin-ting. The actual work conditions didn't match the description - I worked 7 days a week instead of 5, often over 8 hours a day with barely any breaks. The atmosphere was stressful and not supportive. I wouldn't recommend this place for volunteering.
