Kinloch Wilderness Retreat

We offer a relaxed space for you to enjoy stunning wilderness, which many people miss on their travels as the road ends 12kms down from us (you can drive to us). There are mountains everywhere you look and we're right by Lake Whakatipu. We have lots of staff and volunteers for you to buddy up and adventure with in the summer, winter is our quiet time, and plenty of down time for you.

We're a busy family with many businesses to run. Where we can find time to socialise with volunteers we do so, however you are part of a business rather than a family home. We do expect a certain standard of work for your 15hrs a week, then the rest of the day is for you to explore or relax.

This was my first WP experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place. The location is peaceful and remote—having a car is helpful, but not a must. Just be sure to bring insect repellent, as there are plenty of sandflies!

Toni is a fantastic host who makes you feel right at home. There’s plenty to do, from kayaking and hiking to relaxing in the spa. The two lovely dogs enjoy cuddles and walks, making the place even more welcoming. There are even some dumbbells if you want to work out.

I had an amazing time here and would love to come back one day!

Kinloch was the perfect place to start my time in NZ and to plan everything ahead. The work was easy and as expected. It is a beautiful place to stay and perfect to reconnect with nature. Only thing to consider is its remoteness. Can feel a bit stuck without a car but still would recommend for a few weeks.

This experience is truly amazing, and I could not have asked for a better exchange. Toni, John, and T are the most kind and hospitable people. The work exchange is extremely fair, and the time flies by. Everyone here becomes part of a family, and leaving after an amazing 3 weeks is tough. Anyone who is debating coming here or not, please do. you will not regret it.

Kinloch is a beautiful destination with a lot to offer if you love hiking/ tramping, kayaking, and just being out in nature. You can use the bikes, jump in the hot tub or lake, and the work is fairly simple. It's clean and quiet, and the owners are nice.
However, it is very isolated; over an hour drive to Queenstown for anything and the traffic is terrible. I found it disorganized; it was hard to get questions answered. The person who makes the schedule isn't there and they only pay you once at the end of the month.
For the right person it's probably great but I did not enjoy it.

Hi Lucy, we are sorry that you didn't find Kinloch the right fit for you and that you didn't feel that you could get questions answered. We are a remote lodge and we do make that clear for people before you arrive. We have both the owners and also an onsite manager who are there to support the team and are happy to answer any queries that people have. You were staying during the busiest time of the year which is always a challenge, no matter how organised we are. All the best for your travels!

I feel so lucky to have been able to live in such a beautiful and peaceful location as Kinloch. It is extremely remote and probably advisable to have a car here, but I managed without and still explored most of the local hiking opportunities including some of NZ's Great Walks! The working pattern for casual staff is mainly housekeeping where you work to a given schedule, but additional hours can be on kitchen work, gardening, maintenance or whatever else they need - the work pattern can be quite changeable. The other staff are lovely and I've made some incredible friends here!
