Midori Farm Kyoto

Learn the ways of organic food production and enjoy the mountain countryside north of Kyoto City. We have a large, traditional Japanese house and several gardens less than one minute walk from the house. We host events for children of all ages and tourists from around the world.

I have lived in Japan for 27 years, I can speak Japanese well and I enjoy meeting volunteers from all over the world. I have hosted over 50 volunteers and interns since 2017, and we have received over 200 visitors in that time. I do not live at the farm, but in the city about an hour away. I come to the farm 3-5 days a week to work with the team, run events and so on. On the first day volunteers are typically met in Kyoto city and transported in my car to the farm, and then returned after their time with us.
The atmosphere is casual but professional with each other with consideration to the environment and local residents. We have comfortable bedding, a fully equipped kitchen, a shower/bath and proper Japanese high-tech restroom. As part of the staff, we all share in the extra vegetables which cannot be sold. I take my time with all volunteers to make sure everyone is comfortable and learns how to best tend to the gardens and other tasks at hand.

The traditional Japanese house is in fact an Akiya, an old abandoned house. The tatami gathered dust and house mat mites throughout the years. Some spots are stained. Futons are stained and were visibly not cleaned. The fridge was incredibly dirty and I had to clean it. Walls are made of very thin wood, you could see the outside from some cracks. A room had a wall with teared-off wall-paper. Washroom in the garden, visibly not cleaned. Very far away from anything. Buying food is a one day trip with busses. You will be put to work right after your arrival so you don't notice or raise concerns.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you were uncomfortable and that our house did not live up to your expectations. Our property is a traditional, historic house, and the separate outbuilding bathroom is part of its rustic design. Cleanliness is very important to us, and we are addressing your comments. Over the last 3 years, we have hosted more than 40 volunteers, 40 Japanese families, and 20 tourists without receiving these complaints. I strive to improve the situation for everyone.

For my first solo trip as well as my first accommodation on Worldpackers, Chuck made me feel welcome to be of help to the farm. I had a very comfortable stay and learned a lot about organic farming and sustainability. Chuck provided me with lots of help with transportation, groceries, and learning how to do farm work. I would highly recommend the farm to travellers and would love to come back!
