ONE OCEAN NATURE CONSERVATION CENTRE
Award-Winning Conservation Centre. Recognised for exceptional most protected biodiversity marine conservation across Asia. Our work on Usukan Island has earned recognition from leading environmental bodies across Malaysia and beyond. A testament to what happens when science, passion, and community come together. Most travelers come to Borneo to see nature - here, you get to live in it. One Ocean Nature Conservation Centre is a small, working conservation site on a remote island where volunteers experience the real rhythm of nature and contribute to the protection of our marine ecosystem. This isn’t a staged volunteer program or a resort-style experience. Life here is simple and honest: no fancy facilities, no manufactured activities, just a small team working together to care for the ocean and the land around us. Depending on weather, sea conditions, and current projects, volunteers may help with beach clean-ups, reef observation, trail clearing, wildlife monitoring, nursery work, maintenance, or general centre tasks. Some days are physically active, some are slower, and occasionally the best thing to do is pause and appreciate where you are — swimming in the sea, watching the sunset, or walking the beach with new friends after a day’s work. Because we keep our group small (usually 4–6 volunteers), the experience is personal, genuine, and deeply connected to the place and people around you. If you’re looking for constant entertainment or a luxury stay, this probably isn’t the right fit. But if you value authenticity, adventure, simple island living, and the rare opportunity to experience a real conservation environment while forming meaningful friendships along the way, you’ll likely find this to be one of the most memorable parts of your journey.
We are North Borneo natives operating our own nature conservation centre, with over nine years of field experience since our previous Centre. In that time, we have hosted more than 600 volunteers, trained and impacted over 70 local community members, planted 10,000+ corals, and built more than 200 coral nurseries together with our sea native youth, volunteers and supporters. Our work has been recognized for over four consecutive years by Asia Dive Expo (ADEX), the largest and longest-running ocean exploration and dive trade show in Asia. We have worked with people from many backgrounds, and while you are here, you will be treated like part of the family with respect, clear communication, fair expectations, and inclusion in daily life. In return, we expect responsibility, commitment, transparency, and respect for the natural environment, fellow volunteers, guests, and our native community. There is no tolerance for racism, discrimination, or disruptive behavior. Climate change and global warming is real, plans may change due to weather or operational needs, and safety always priority. We are not a fancy resort, not a party entertainment place, and not a volunteer factory. We are a small team doing practical conservation work, preserving nature and if you come with the right attitude, you will be treated fairly, honestly, warm and with love.
