South Ward Farm

We offer more opportunities than any other host that we know of and people come back year after year.
We specialise in hosting people of a similar age,16 to 30. This helps you make friends with people like you. There could be 8 or 10 of you.
We try to keep an even balance of girls and boys. This create's a great social atmosphere.
Free WiFi Average download speed of 160 to 200 Mbps
We allow camp fires for evening gatherings at weekends.
Wild swimming in the river.
Kayaking.
Great hiking in a beautiful area with lots of friends.
Because of the number of people around there will always be plenty of things to do, so you won't get bored. Especially in comparison with other hosts who only have one ore two volunteers. And if the age range is not the same as yours you could be lonely.
You have every opportunity to improve your English. This is our speciality. Only English is spoken here and we do everything we can to help and encourage you.
Coming here is like going on a summer camp. Group and individual activities around the farm. You will have good memories for the rest of your life!
There are many opportunities to learn and improve skills that you may or may not already have. All you need is a willingness to learn and we will help.
Unlimited amounts of food.
Group breakfast, tea break and lunchtime meals. The meals are always good. Lunch is our main cooked meal, add salad plus desert. Evening meals can be of your own choice and making or can be a group meal where everyone helps.
Games in the evenings. Remember there will be 8 or more ready to play and engage. You won't be left in your room alone with no one to talk to except your phone!
We can go fishing in the river.
Wildlife walks and hikes in one of the most beautiful parts of England.
Generally, we can supply most things you may need. While you are here you will not need to buy anything.
We have more than 60 positive reviews on other sites.
Locally:
There's a great local social club only 35 minutes walk away.
Small village with shops.
The station to Plymouth is 30 minutes walk away for days out and weekends away.

I have been managing volunteers since 2010. I do my best to find the best in the volunteers that come through my farm and encourage them to find their way in the world.
We have a common goal because volunteers are doing something because they want to, not because they have to. I hope our volunteers are passionate about their work – and want to have impact. Volunteers aren't bound by the same command and control requirements that "employees" are. Volunteers can leave when they want if they don't think things are moving in a direction they like.

Staying in southward has been a mixed bag for me. The šŸ‘: the volunteers were fantastic and we made many good memories together The work, although tiring and sometimes dirty was a new experience for me and I enjoyed the new opportunities. The šŸ‘Ž: The host made multiple comments about my race and also was very easily irritated over little issues (e.g. water not being hot, too few veges on his plate). I hope that he will be more respectful towards future volunteers and learn to be more understanding towards mistakes. This is just my experience and i hope others will have a better time there.

Hi Hao En, thank you for sharing your thoughts.

For over 20 years, our goal has been building a global community where volunteers form lasting friendships. I’m glad you felt that bond.

Farm work requires mutual effort, and matching tasks can be tough. I take all feedback to heart, including respect and patience, to ensure everyone feels welcome. Wish you all the best in your travels!

It was a good experience, a place far from the city but easy to reach, incredible nature; there is a river near the house where we can swim, and there is always a large flow of volunteers; everyone's taste varies, some people like it and others don't 🫠 there are always other options

I spent 2 wonderful months at the farm. The landscape is beautiful and you can use kayaks when clients haven't reserved them; the surroundings are very peaceful. If you want to step out of your comfort zone, meet new people, work autonomously with fixed schedules and be near nature: come to The Enchanted Wilderness! You might even have the chance to meet and look after Jonathan's adorable grandchildren when they come to visit him!

What can I say about this great place that welcomed me and I was my home for two months, I met extraordinary people, and the work was varied, heavy some days and light others but I enjoyed it. So, don't hesitate to go; thanks for everything, Jhonatan, I hope to return someday.

It was my first volunteering experience, and it was truly incredible. The house is very cozy, the scenery is beautiful, and the tasks are quite simple.
The place is filled with art, which makes it feel even more welcoming. I was lucky enough to meet and spend time with amazing people; Johnatan is kind and patient with my very basic English, and I learned a lot of the language there.
Thank you so much for everything and for giving me the opportunity to leave a small mark of my own art.
