The Experience

I am Diana Rico, a Colombian artist based at Santa Helena, a century-old sabanera farmhouse in the Sabana de BogotΓ‘. The house preserves its original architecture, art studio, and player piano. I also hold traditional and holistic ceremonies, including temazcal (sweat lodge) and equine-assisted processes. I seek calm volunteers to support domestic tasks, gardening, and organization.

Diana and her family were incredible, we love the time at Santa Helena, animals, nature and the environment brought us an especial adventure.

Diana received our family with love, hopefully we'll be back and contribute with the space, she have a lot of stories about the place and the dialy tasks are easy and enjoyable.

I highly recommend this amazing family! they were such a beautiful presence in the house- organized, full of creativity and overall highly proactive . They built a compost place that was so needed and also completly transformed an unused space in to a gorgeous room. They are sensitive, environmentally aware and loving people. They left a lasting memory in our home. Great experience and lots of laughs too!

At Finca de Santa Helena I was warmly welcome by Diana, even before I arrived we were able to arrange a call to make sure things were aligned. When I arrived I was only the 2nd or 3rd volunteer she has hosted, so naturally, we are all learning together on how to make this the best experience for everyone. When I was unsure about what projects to work on I had a conversation with her about it and it helped me feel like I was able to engage more fully around the property. She has a super chill structure here, and if I had questions she encouraged me to ask. If you are self motivated I recommend!

Elena initially agreed to stay for two weeks but extended her stay to over a month. She is a nice person, but overall, the level of reciprocity did not feel proportionate to the support ( transport, use of space , knowldege shared )and flexibility provided us. Cleanliness and organization were ongoing concerns, requiring repeated reminders, and the room was not left in proper condition upon departure. I recommend setting clear expectations regarding initiative, cleanliness, and use of space.

I stayed in Dianas home for 2 weeks. The house is very historic, rustique and full of art as the family have been artists for generations. This spirit is reflected all over this special place. I took care of the horses and could even join in to some riding lessons which I very much enjoyed. I had the chance to participate in a temascal which is a traditional mesoamerican sweatlodge. Tasks may vary from day to day. I did wood for the chimney and worked on renewing the fences for the horse paddocks. The way of work is very fluid and requires a self directed mindset.
