The Experience

Our center is one of the 100 meditation centres founded by the Burman monk Ottamathara, where people in difficulty (homeless, people with addictions, single parents, people with mental and physical problems) find refuge and hospitality for free, in a climate of total openness and joy, while meditators and volunteers from all over the world collaborate on existing projects or propose new ones. Everything Is for free!

My stay at the the Center in Tabharwa was an incredible experience and a great learning journey! As my second volunteering experience, it was absolutely excellent. I learned a lot, met amazing people, and felt deeply connected with the Center. The daily tasks were simple and fun, and the surroundings area are beautiful mountain where you can walk, traditional small towns and a river nearby. I really hope to come back soon. Highly recommended!

I volunteered at the Center for two months, and it was a meaningful and unique experience. The volunteer community is warm, supportive, and caring. I formed close friendships and learned a lot about acceptance and unconditional love. The routine provides structure, though there is sometimes limited space for rest when unwell. Language can be a challenge, as communication is mostly in Italian. The environment may be challenging for those with allergies. Overall, it's a special place with connection to the Center, deep connections with others, and great food. I'm grateful for my stay, Thank you!!

Thank you, May 🌱 It was truly beautiful to share this experience with you. We’re happy you connected with the community, nature, and the spirit of our social volunteer project. Although English is commonly spoken, living here is also an opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian culture. Being surrounded by forest, allergies can feel stronger during seasonal changes

The Center offers lessons in routine, community, meditation and reflection, set in beautiful mountain landscape with supportive volunteers. However, the reality differs from the “spiritual retreat” portrayed online. It functions as a high-intensity rehab center for residents with psychiatric needs, often lacking active engagement and safety. Volunteers need significant social stamina to navigate heavy emotional dynamics and rigid, authoritative management. Daily tasks are to cook, clean, garden and lead our own workshops. A top-down hierarchy and lack of feedback make it difficult to feel valued

Thank u for your feedback; we truly value your contribution. We’d like to clarify that we aren't a "spiritual retreat," but a community helping people in difficulty by using Buddhist philosophy and meditation as tools for personal growth and healthy living.
We aren't a high-intensity rehab center; we support individuals seeking autonomy through a structured guidance project. We prioritize horizontal communication and strive to be a safe space for everyone. We appreciate u giving your best here!

The Center is a peaceful community where I was able to be more in touch with myself and my feelings. The work's very chill and you either usually do cleaning, cooking, working outside, or walking the goats. I had loads of free time, there is a town nearby and a river that is nice for a dip, and Sundays I was able to travel with the others to nearby cities which was very exciting. I made some treasurable connections with the people there that I am already missing and learnt about their stories. Most of the people speak mainly Italian, but there was lots of love shared nonetheless without words.

My trip to the Center was my first time ever going on a solo trip and it was definitely a memorable one, i spent a month and 1 week there and made great connections and memories and had some great food and also had time to travel to different cities and to try new things, i definitely recommend this place for anyone who is interested, also to note that the main work you would be judged on is the work with the residents in terms of making sure they're well and trying to make their time as comfortable as possible, which is not a problem just helps to communicate at start
