The Experience

We are a social and humanitarian NGO whose aim is to combat the causes of poverty. It's a decentralized movement in which each group roots its activities in the local reality. In Caneças, there are between 15 and 20 of us who live in community following the values of the movement. Our activities include collecting and sorting donated items, preparing the store, as well as community activities such as cooking, gardening and caring for animals.

Great experience with Emaùs! From the beginning, it was easy to communicate, to settle, to arrive. On my request, I stayed 99% at Caneças, due to my willing to learn portuguese and get in touch more with local people (! be more aware than me that days are longer due to the philosophy to be on the same rythme than the community there) but I was still on a frequent and friendly contact with Ophélie and their nice trainee, Eva . Tasks were clear, diverse. Perfect last day where I joined the team at pop-up store for a celebration there. Thank you Ophélie, Eva, Pereira and companions.

We had an amazing experience, the time in Canecas served to valorated the work of the mates, and the objective of the store in Lisbon. we felted very recived in both stores, Offelia is an amazaing person, she makes to fell very comfortable and like a home. Also the time with the mates was very interesting, learning some Portuguese history and culture.

I truly loved my time at the organization, it was a very unique experience and I definitely enjoyed it most when there were other volunteers staying there for me to work with. Humberto and Ophélie are so kind, I always felt taken care of and so so welcomed

I had an amazing time at the organization. Both the hosts Ophielle and Humberto were so fun and welcoming, as well as the other volunteers I met while there! While I was only there for 2 weeks, I felt very immersed in the local community. I loved the atmosphere and would definitely recommend this volunteer experience!!

I can only hundert Procent recommend this place Not only the social impact you are involved in but also the lovely people around you during the time that made my stay unforgettable. My friend and me we started with one week in Lisbon and ended our Programm with some days in Canecas. The combination of both places made up a perfect mix of connecting with Lisbon it self but at the same time with the companions that lived in canecas. The hosts Humberto and Ophelie made you really feel welcome from the beginning on and they also thought us a lot about the organization itSelf what was really interesting:)
