The Experience

Nine people are needed to carry out the project, and in the meantime we welcome occasional support with various tasks such as gardening, different structures, water piping, solar energy, bioconstruction, methane production, and more... Fieldwork with animals, environment, gathering wild herbs and processing, gardens, trees; in short: a variety of day-to-day tasks depending on the season.

Juan is a very kind and generous man. He did everything he could to make my stay comfortable and made me feel at home.

We did have some issues with communication because Juan doesn't speak English and my understanding of Spanish is very limited, but we used Google translate and I feel like my Spanish improved a lot in my short time there. He lives off the grid and heats his home and the volunteer quarters with a wood stove. There is a gas heater for the volunteer bedroom but I had issues using it so I mostly kept warm by putting hot rocks heated on the wood stove in the bed.

Juan replied

It is appreciated; I hope that little by little, with the support of volunteers, the overall situation improves, so that more and more people here feel at ease.
Now I already have many activities and my priority is tree felling and cutting firewood... if Ricardo comes now in March, it will surely ease some of the chores!
I already told Linda, who is sociable and enjoys group life, that I hope to see her again when the project is more advanced.

My stay in Velilla was splendid; having had the opportunity to meet Juan and hear his perspective on the project was something that changed a lot about the way I see things, for the better and in many respects. Also, the people in the town were very kind and I had the opportunity to visit the surroundings as well. I would have liked to be able to collaborate more with the activities, but I hope the project receives more support; I wouldn't think twice if you're considering being part of it. Thank you very much for everything, Juan.
