The Experience

My name is Diana and I am passionate about reducing waste. I set up a local free cycle group 8 years ago and now it's hugely successful with 29000 members. I was a finalist nominee in the green hero category with the community awards. The house has 2 bubbly kids of 9 and 3, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 30 something chickens. My partner Carl works away half of the time so it can be busy!! I collect urplus food waste and organise distribution to local families.

My travel partner and I had a great experience staying with Diana and her family. We helped with housekeeping, painting, Vinted listings, and childcare. We also gained a lot of insight into sustainable practices, and the effort that Diana puts towards her community is truly inspiring! We were able to explore Northern Ireland on our days off, which was fantastic. I highly recommend this relaxed yet rewarding volunteering opportunity. I wish Diana and her family the very best and will miss our countless laughs. Thank you for everything❤️

My experience with Diana and her family was awesome! Diana showed us a lot of Northern Ireland, and the flexible work allowed me to try different tasks based on my interests. I usually prefer a structured schedule, but I adjusted quickly. I really admire Diana's dedication to her family, community, and no waste lifestyle. I'll especially miss her two kids, who LOVE playing games and eating lollies🤣 I'm very grateful for my time here and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a flexible and social environment!! Thank you Diana🫶

I had a really great experience staying with Diana and her family. From the first day I felt very welcome and part of the household. The work is meaningful and connected to an inspiring project focused on reducing waste and helping the local community. The house is full of life, with kids, dogs, a cat and chickens, so it’s perfect for anyone who enjoys a warm and active family environment. The exchange is fair and honest, and you truly feel useful. I learned a lot and I definitely recommend this experience.

Thank-you for your kind words vagner, It was great to meet you, and think bodhi reckons his football skills are better than yours so you'll have to cone back for more practice 😉 😀

Diana and her family were very welcoming, sociable, and we felt involved in their daily life. That said, I think it is important to point out some practical aspects that could be relevant for future volunteers. The family adopts a lifestyle extremely oriented toward saving with habits that may require a certain spirit of adaptation.
Regarding food, great importance is given to reducing waste and there are occasions when foods near or beyond the expiry date are consumed. All in all, it was an interesting and educational experience.
