The Experience

Make fellow travelers feel welcome and help them wind down. Checking-in guests, share travel ideas, keep things tidy and clean during the check-in time. Volunteers can relax and study, read, do art or do personal work while waiting for guests. Or get some free drinks in our cafe downstairs! We sometimes do community activities with the local government nearby. Not required, but recommended to join us!

I would recommend this experience to everyone!! I spent a month at the guest house and I absolutely have nothing to complain about — everything was great! Kumi and Chris are incredibly kind people and always do their best to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. The local staff are also all young and fun, and I had the opportunity to make friends with volunteers from all over the world! The work is super easygoing, and they always respect the agreed working hours and days off. The breakfast included is also always delicious and filling!

Wоrking at this café was the mоst delightful experience I had during my time in Japan! The team was incredibly kind and humоrоus, and the jоb itself was really enjоyable․ I cherished every single mоment spent there plus, the sоdas were my absоlute favоrite drink․ Matsumоtо and the Naganо prefecture оffer sо much tо explоre, with stunning nature all arоund․ I wоuld recоmmend it tо anyоne! And Chris is such a wоnderful, funny persоn․

I'm so grateful for my time here! Chris, Kumi and their family are incredibly kind and welcoming. I worked in the café, helping with washing dishes, preparing drinks, cleaning tables, etc. I'm especially grateful for the beautiful relationship I built with the café staff, as well as with the other volunteers I met. I'll always carry those friendships and memories with me.
I loved sharing experience like the Yamaga FC match, Matsumoto Bon Bon festival, karaoke, Mario Kart nights, shared meals and even Suikawari by the river! I would absolutely recommend it, and I hope I can come back someday!🫶🏼

I can't be grateful enough for this place !
I felt warmly welcomed, by Chris and Kumi and their family, as well as the Storyhouse and Guesthouse staff, and other volunteers. I worked both Café and Guesthouse and plannings were really well managed so I got a lot of time to both relax and explore Nagano Prefecture and surroundings. Also, I truly enjoyed learning Latte Art when time would allow it, and the guesthouse was super social and cozy. Kumi, Chris, thank you so much 🫶🏼 !! You set the bar really high for future volunteerings, and I will surely be back in Matsumoto ✨🏞️🗾

My time here is one that will forever be etched in my memory. First time volunteering in a different country, the experience here was nothing short of extraordinary! Chris and Kumi were extremely kind, funny, and warm. They treated everyone like family, often inviting us to local events, dinners, pot lucks, karaoke, and having Mario Kart Parties down at the cafe amongst many more! My days off were spent exploring what Matsumoto fully has to offer, and I can definitely say I fell in love with the city. I can definitely say I fell in love with the city. Can't wait to be back!
